A novel low-modulus titanium alloy for biomedical applications: A comparison between selective laser melting and metal injection moulding

چکیده
The mechanical properties of new low-modulus beta titanium alloyed designed for biomedical applications are measured and compared when processed via the selective laser melting (SLM) metal injection moulding (MIM) processes. Mechanical tensile testing reveals important differences between them: (i) Under optimal settings, SLM produces strong, ductile properties. This is associated with creating fully dense material appropriate microstructure after solidification. (ii) MIM can produce materials similar strength/stiffness ratios, but reduced ductility. processes linked to changes in chemistry microstructure: carbon pickup from binder slow cooling rate responsible appearance Ti2C resulting low ductility very high strength together a transition intergranular transgranular fracture.

متن کاملComparison of Various Properties between Titanium-Tantalum Alloy and Pure Titanium for Biomedical Applications
The mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of the titanium-tantalum alloys together with pure titanium are comparatively studied for biomedical applications in this study. The experimental results confirm the previous theoretic investigation that tantalum has a potential to enhance the strength and reduce the elastic modulus of titanium alloys at the same time, and ind...
متن کاملProduction of Porous β-Type Ti–40Nb Alloy for Biomedical Applications: Comparison of Selective Laser Melting and Hot Pressing
We used selective laser melting (SLM) and hot pressing of mechanically-alloyed β-type Ti-40Nb powder to fabricate macroporous bulk specimens (solid cylinders). The total porosity, compressive strength, and compressive elastic modulus of the SLM-fabricated material were determined as 17% ± 1%, 968 ± 8 MPa, and 33 ± 2 GPa, respectively. The alloy's elastic modulus is comparable to that of healthy...
